The Lake Massasecum Improvement Association has a very busy agenda protecting the water quality and life around the lake.
Davis # 1 sample is taken where the brook enters the lake and Davis #2 is where Davis brook crosses under Davis Road. Each year there seems to be elevated levels of e.coli in Davis Brook so we have been testing it each month in an effort to determine what is causing these elevated levels. To date, the only explanation has been wildlife. At one point, there were beavers up stream and cattle grazing in a field. Anything higher than eighty-eight (88) is elevated. State law prohibits swimming in areas that have a rating higher than 88. If an elevated rating comes back from the state labs we immediately re-test.
The Lake Massasecum Improvement Association has been participating in the NH Lakes Association Lake Host Program for the last three years. This program is designed to educate boaters and lake users on the prevention and introduction and spread of exotic aquatic plants (such as variable milfoil) in NH lakes and ponds.
Currently we have Lake Hosts monitoring the boat launch area five days a week from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday through Sunday. They inspect every boat that enters and leaves the lake as well as providing educational and boating safety literature to visitors as they come to enjoy Lake Massasecum. The Town of Bradford through an annual appropriation helps extend the coverage beyond that of the grant that is provided by the NH Lakes Association. This program has been very successful in preventing the spread of milfoil. This
